This article I stumbled upon was explaining reasons you should listen to music when you're working out and it got me thinking about my all time must-have workout tunes. Honestly, whatever assists in people staying focused on their exercise is a good thing. I have seen peoples' motivation in classes depend on music and how much they engage with the workout-it's a very true thing when talking about staying motivated for an hour class. I know for me, it helps me stay focused and unaware of distractions around me. I am not a music listener, however, when I run (except for hill repeats) or race because the act of running and competing is a "happy zone" for me that I like to be in tune to (and running with headphones is not always safe.) However, if I am cross-training, lifting, or working out at home...I crank the tunes and get lost in the music.
Listening to music can increase your effort thus creating a harder workout, that's why often fun spin classes or bootcamp will have bumping music with a great beat, to keep you focused and your effort high! Additionally, good music can elevate your mood making your workout more enjoyable...think about that moment when you say "Oh, I love this song!"
Music helps me place "future me" in upcoming races and goal situations, almost like a visualization technique. When I am in a good zone, I picture myself fit, strong and at the top of my game. I tend to gravitate towards rap, some amazing classics, and many where the lyrics motivate me deeply. My list obviously doesn't suit everyone (sorry, Mom). I love to blast "Super Freak" by Rick James on the way to races, it makes me laugh and loosen up before I push myself. With that, here's my most current and eclectic top 12 workout jams I use.
